LP Gas at Home in Mexico: Costs & How It Works (2026 Guide)

Most Mexican homes run on LP gas, not natural gas. Here is how tanks and cylinders work, what you will really pay each month, refill costs, safety tips, and where natural gas exists in 2026.

Why Your Stove Runs on a Different Kind of Gas

One of the first surprises for North Americans setting up a home in Mexico is discovering that the gas heating their water and powering their stove is not piped in from the street. In most of the country, homes run on LP gas (gas LP)—liquefied petroleum, or propane—delivered by truck and stored in a tank on your property. Only a handful of cities have widespread natural gas (gas natural) pipelines.

This guide explains the two ways LP gas is stored, what it actually costs per month, how refills work, key safety practices, and where natural gas is an option in 2026. This is practical guidance, not technical or safety certification—always follow your installer’s and supplier’s instructions.

The Two Systems: Stationary Tank vs. Cylinder

Every LP-gas home in Mexico uses one of two setups. Knowing which you have—or want—matters for both cost and convenience.

Stationary tank (tanque estacionario):

  • A permanent tank, typically 120 to 500 liters, installed on your roof, in a side yard, or on a ground pad.
  • Refilled in place by a delivery truck (pipa) that pumps gas directly into it.
  • You pay by the liter at the moment of refill.
  • Best for houses, families, and anyone who wants to refill on their own schedule.

Portable cylinder (cilindro / tanque de gas):

  • A movable steel cylinder, commonly 20, 30, or 45 kg.
  • Swapped out—the delivery crew takes your empty and leaves a full one.
  • You pay by the kilogram, at a slightly different rate than stationary gas.
  • Best for apartments, small homes, and rentals where a permanent tank is not practical.

Both systems are supplied by regional distributors, and prices are regulated with a maximum price published periodically by the federal energy regulator, though what you pay can vary by region and supplier.

What LP Gas Actually Costs Per Month

Costs depend heavily on how you use gas. The biggest driver is your water heater. Here is the practical breakdown:

  • Price per liter (stationary): commonly around 12 to 16 MXN per liter in 2026 (roughly $0.65–$0.90 USD/liter), varying by region.
  • Price per kilogram (cylinder): commonly around 22 to 28 MXN per kg.

Typical monthly consumption for a foreign household:

  • Small apartment, gas stove only, electric or solar water heating: very low, often 150–400 MXN/month ($8–$22 USD).
  • Average home with gas water heater and stove: roughly 400–900 MXN/month ($22–$50 USD).
  • Large home, gas water heater, pool heating, frequent cooking: 1,000–2,500 MXN/month ($55–$140 USD) or more.

A common pattern is refilling a 300-liter stationary tank two to four times a year for a modest household, spending a few hundred dollars USD annually in total.

How Refills Work Day to Day

LP gas delivery is easy once you learn the rhythm:

  1. Watch your gauge. Stationary tanks have a percentage gauge on top. Plan to refill when you drop to around 20–25%—do not run to zero.
  2. Call or message your supplier, or flag down the delivery truck that circulates through most neighborhoods honking or playing a jingle.
  3. For stationary tanks, the crew pumps gas in and gives you a printed ticket showing liters and price. Confirm the meter starts near zero before they begin.
  4. For cylinders, they swap empty for full and charge by weight.
  5. Tip the crew a small amount (10–30 MXN) if they carry a heavy cylinder upstairs—customary but not required.

Many suppliers now offer WhatsApp ordering and card payment, which is more reliable than waiting for a truck to pass.

Safety: The Non-Negotiables

LP gas is safe when handled correctly, but propane is heavier than air and pools low, so respect a few rules:

  • Install a gas detector low to the floor near the stove and water heater.
  • Never store cylinders indoors or in enclosed, unventilated spaces.
  • Check connections with soapy water (bubbles mean a leak) rather than a flame, ever.
  • If you smell gas (suppliers add a rotten-egg odorant), do not flip switches—ventilate, shut the valve, and leave.
  • Have a licensed technician inspect regulators and hoses periodically; rubber hoses degrade in the sun.
  • Confirm the delivery meter and price before and after a stationary refill—short-filling is the most common complaint.

Where Natural Gas Exists in Mexico

Natural gas is cheaper per unit of energy than LP and does not require refills, but the pipeline network is limited. As of 2026, residential natural gas is most available in and around:

  • Monterrey and much of Nuevo León (the most extensive network).
  • Mexico City and parts of the State of Mexico.
  • Guadalajara, Querétaro, and several central/northern industrial corridors.

In most beach and southern destinations popular with expats—the Yucatán Peninsula, the Riviera Maya, Los Cabos, and Puerto Vallarta—natural gas is essentially unavailable, and LP gas is the norm. Do not assume a home has natural gas; verify before you buy or rent.

Tips to Lower Your Gas Bill

A few upgrades pay for themselves quickly:

  • Solar water heaters (calentadores solares) are extremely effective in sunny regions and can cut gas use dramatically.
  • On-demand (tankless) gas water heaters waste less than tank-style units.
  • Refill during the day so you can verify the meter in good light.
  • Buy stationary over cylinder where possible—per-unit cost is usually lower and you avoid running out.
